Junction City teenager Sophia Smrz, 17, was killed in a car accident on her way to school for swim practice early on Friday morning. Smrz graduated from Marshfield High School as a senior. At 5:44 a.m. on Monday, April 15, the Town of Auburndale reported a car accident on County Highway Y near Shady Road to the Wood County Dispatch Centre. Sophia Ann Smrz (Marshfield, Wisconsin) passed away on September 22, 2023 at the age of seventeen, leaving behind loved ones to grieve.
Harold and Betty Richardson and Evangeline Hasselberger were her great-grandparents; her great-uncle Wesley Spreda and great-aunts Mary Ann Grassl, Marjorie Singer, Alice Liebe, Marilyn Hellmich, Jeanette Smrz, Eugene Smrz, Wesley Spreda, John Gaddini, and Dennis Richardson also passed away before she was born.

On Sunday, October 1st, 2023, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and again on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, there will be a visitation. On Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 2:00 PM, funeral rites will be performed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church (146 Main St, Milladore, WI 54454). Sophia, a bright young student, started the day like any other: ready to dive headfirst into her work. However, a report of a car accident reached the Wood County Dispatch Center at a chilly 5:44 a.m. The accident happened in Auburndale, at the corner of Shady Road and County Highway Y.

At that tragic crossroads, two cars crashed, and both ended up off the road. Jason Peterson, 46, of Arpin, was the driver of one of the automobiles, and he was heading north on Shady Road. Sophia Smrz was driving the other vehicle westbound on County Highway Y. Sophia was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, and Peterson was taken to Marshfield Medical Center with unknown injuries.
