Polly Klaas

Polly Klaas

Polly Hannah Klaas was an American girl who was murdered and the story surrounding her death received coverage in the national media. In this post, we are going to talk about the complete details including what happened to her and how she passed away.

What is the Reason Behind Polly Klaas’ Death?

Twelve-year-old Polly Klaas and her two friends were having a sleepover at her mother’s house in Petaluma, California, on October 1, 1993. She was kidnapped that day at knifepoint. Around 10:30 p.m., a drunk Richard Allen Davis with a knife entered her bedroom.

He assured the girl he was merely there for financial gain and had no intention of hurting them. Davis tied up both of her friends, put pillows over their heads, and told them to count to 1,000. But after that, he kidnapped Klaas.

The search for Klaas involved around 4,000 individuals over the following two months. On Friday, December 3, a thorough investigation was started. Over 500 search team members from 24 agencies, traveling from as far away as Kern County, California and Washoe County, Nevada, assisted the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department.

The California State Office of Emergency Services (now called the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services), FBI Crime Scene teams and numerous other state and federal agencies coordinated the mutual help operation. Even now, the search is among the biggest ever carried out in California.

The hunt went on until Saturday, December 4. Other pieces of evidence were found as a result of the search, but no signs of human remains were found. On the evening of December 4, Davis admitted to abducting and killing Klaas and led authorities to her body.

He had interred her in a small grave not far from Highway 101, about a mile south of Cloverdale, California’s city borders. About 20 air miles and 30 road miles separate the burial from the search area. Davis acknowledged killing Klaas by strangling him, but he refused to provide detectives with a timeline of what happened starting on October 1.

Davis was found guilty of first-degree murder with four special circumstances (robbery, burglary, kidnapping and attempted indecent conduct on a minor) in Klaas’s death on June 18, 1996, following a protracted and contentious trial.

A jury in the San Jose Superior Court rendered a death sentence. Davis taunted the relatives of his victim after his formal sentencing by pointing both middle fingers at the courtroom camera. Davis was subsequently formally sentenced to death by Judge Thomas Hastings.

What Did Polly Klaas’ Investigators Say About Her Case?

In an episode of 20/20 called “Taken in the Night,” Polly’s tragedy is brought up again. Show host Juju Chang is in charge of the broadcast as she talks to people who were involved in Polly’s research and gets their first-hand accounts.

You can see the below tweet in which Juju Chang talks to people related to this case:

When the episode’s cable launch is over, people can go to Hulu to stream it and watch the episode. Lead FBI investigator Eddie Freyer said on “20/20” that he frequently passes the location where Polly’s body was eventually discovered and thinks about how it has evolved into sacred ground for the neighborhood.

He said:

“Every time I go by there, there’s a new addition to this area. A new cross, a ribbon tied in the tree quite often, teddy bears, jewelry spread out and rocks.”

Have a look at the below tweet in which you can listen to the statements of other investigators related to this case:

Vail Bello, a former detective sergeant for the Petaluma Police Department, said:

“It was like a boogeyman came in and stole her out of that house.”

Polly’s father, Marc Klaas, who was not living with Polly’s mother “Eve Nichol” at the time, said that the intruder wanted money but didn’t take any cash. You can watch the episode and get more information related to her death.
