What Inspired Vivian Howard To Start Chef?

In 2004, Howard completed his studies at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. After working as a kitchen intern at Wylie Dufresne’s WD50, she became a Chef de Partie at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Spice Market.

Howard wed Ben Knight, a fellow employee at Voyage, and the two set up shop in their Harlem apartment, chilling soup in the bathtub, to serve the local community. The pair decided to take up Howard’s parents’ offer to buy a restaurant in Kinston, despite the fact that financiers had offered to help them open a storefront in New York. A former print shop and mule stable, Howard and Knight settled in North Carolina in 2005 and founded Chef & the Farmer the following year. Sixty-plus percent of the restaurant’s food is sourced from within a 90-mile radius.

In 2011, Howard reached out to her friend Cynthia Hill, a filmmaker based in Eastern North Carolina, out of worry that some cuisine traditions might be lost without documentation. Howard and Hill collaborated on the pilot’s production. Seasons 1 and 2 aired nationally on PBS and South Carolina Educational Television from 2013 to 2015. The fifth season debuted in the fall of 2017. This show ran for five seasons before ending with a one-hour “Harvest Special.”
