The two broke their silence about the breakup on September 6 when they posted a joint message on Instagram. They wrote, “We have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage.” Read their full statement in a post provided below:
What did Legal Experts Say About Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner’s Divorce?
Legal experts say that Sophie Turner’s new case against her ex-husband Joe Jonas could be a way to get around a court order that says she can’t move her kids outside of the US.
Matrimonial lawyers said Turner’s case is weak and that she is trying to get out of the Florida ruling that says she can’t move with her two young girls while she and her husband are going through a divorce.
Manhattan divorce lawyer Bernard Clair said:
“Sophie appears to be trying very hard to get the kids to England in violation of the Florida court’s prohibition. In short, she thinks that her petition here in New York is a way to do something indirectly, that she cannot do directly.”
The “Game of Thrones” actress said in the Manhattan federal suit that the Jonas Brothers singer was refusing to let their two girls go back to their “forever home” in England.
Jonas, who filed for a divorce hit back in a statement from his rep and said, “The Florida Court has already entered an order that restricts both parents from relocating the children.”
Turner was given the court order on September 6, the day after Jonas filed for divorce in Florida to end their four-year marriage. New York City Matrimonial lawyer Stuart Slotnick said:
“The reason she went to federal court is because she is seeking to trump the state court action where the divorce is pending, where there has already been a custody determination.”
Turner sued using the Hague Convention which has laws about international child abduction for “heinous” cases like when a parent runs away with their kids to a foreign country. You can check the below tweet which confirms the news that Turner sued Joe Jonas:

Most of the time, these kinds of cases are shocking and read of a terrible story of kidnapping. Slotnick said:
“After you read it you should come to the conclusion that a heinous wrongful act has occurred and the child must reunited to one parent in their proper country, There is nothing shocking here.”
Turner’s case is about a pair getting a divorce. One parent wasn’t happy with how the case was handled in one court, so she went to a different one. Slotnick said that the suit could be a way for Turner to get permission to take her kids abroad. Slotnick said:
“These cases are a race to the bottom, One party does something, the other party reacts and it gets ugly real fast.”
Clair, a divorce lawyer in Manhattan also said that the case could end up being very “messy” because the divorce is happening in Florida, the federal lawsuit is happening in New York and Turner wants to move the whole divorce case to England.
If the New York suit goes forward and isn’t thrown out or put on hold because of the Florida case, both lawyers said Turner and Jonas would have to appear before a judge in Manhattan federal court. They would have to present evidence and call witnesses to back up their claims.

When did Joe Jonas & Sophie Turner Get Married?
In 2016, the actor from “Game of Thrones” and the singer from the Jonas Brothers first talked to each other through Instagram DMs.
Soon after they became friends on Instagram, Jonas asked Turner to hang out with him while his tour was in the U.K. Turner’s friends thought it would be “hilarious” and got her to agree. In 2017, Jonas got down on one knee and asked Turner to be his wife. They both posted on Instagram a picture of Turner’s hand showing off her engagement ring.
