On May 17, 1976, Kandi Lenice Burruss was born in College Park, Georgia. When he was 22 years old, her older brother Patrick perished in an automobile accident. She graduated from Tri-Cities Performing Arts High School in East Point, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta.

When she was 15 years old, she made her debut appearance on television on BET’s “Teen Summit.” She founded Xscape in high school along with Tamika, LaTocha and Tameka “Tiny Cottle.” Scott. The quartet was contracted to Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Recordings label. In 1994, Kandi earned her high school diploma.

Kandi was a senior in high school when Xscape’s debut album, “Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha” was released in the fall of 1993. It generated two top 10 songs and peaked at number three on the R&B charts. 1995 saw the release of “Off the Hook,” Xscape’s second album.

“Traces of My Lipstick” the third and final album by the group was released in 1998. LaTocha Scott quit the group after its third album to focus on a solo career.
