Brandon Hunter was an American professional basketball player. Following his collegiate career at Ohio University, where he led the NCAA in rebounding in 2002–03, he was chosen by the Boston Celtics with the 56th overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.

After spending one NBA season with each of the Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic, he began a journeyman playing career that was spent primarily in Europe. We are deeply saddened to inform you that he passed away.

He died at the age of 42 on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. Ohio men’s basketball coach Jeff Boals confirmed the news of his death by sharing a tweet:

His cause of death has not yet been confirmed. The Magic said in a statement, “We are terribly saddened to learn of the loss of our former teammate, Brandon Hunter. We send our deepest condolences to the entire Hunter family.”

Hunter, a native of Cincinnati was a standout forward for Ohio in college. Ohio Basketball tweeted, “We are saddened to hear about the loss of Ohio basketball legend Brandon Hunter. Our thoughts are with Brandon’s family at this time.”

From 1999 through 2003, he played as a star forward for the Ohio University Bobcats basketball team, earning four letters in the process. In 2000, he was named to the All-Mid-American Conference Freshman Team. From 2001 through 2003, he was named to the All-MAC First Team three times.

Hunter was selected 56th overall in the second round of the 2003 NBA draft and played in the NBA for two seasons after graduating from Ohio University. Before switching to the Orlando Magic for the 2004–2005 season, he previously played for the Boston Celtics.

According to a 2017 feature of Hunter by WCPO-TV, he then went on to play basketball overseas in nations including Greece, Italy, Puerto Rico and Turkey before eventually returning to the Cincinnati area to pursue careers in real estate and sports management.
