Bryan Shelton, the current head coach of the men’s tennis team for the Florida Gators, is Shelton’s father. Tiafoe and Shelton the First Black Men to Reach the US Open Quarterfinals
Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton’s quarterfinal encounter at the US Open on Tuesday was groundbreaking regardless of the outcome since it featured two Black men competing against one another. Shelton won the historic match, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(7), 6-2, and advanced to face Novak Djokovic, winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, in the semifinals.
It was also the first time since 2008 that a match featuring two Black men had taken place at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Almost two decades have passed since a male American tennis player won the US Open. Tennis fans are pausing to appreciate this historic matchup, despite the fact that much attention has been paid to the question of whether or not 2023 will be the year that the drought finally ends.
He predicted that the additions of Tiafoe and Shelton “are going to enrich the game.” As a result of the encounter between the two up-and-coming tennis players, interest in Black males in the sport has been revitalized. Tiafoe, 25, and Shelton, 20, squared off at a stadium named for the trailblazing Black tennis great.

Arthur Ashe was the first African-American to achieve multiple firsts in tennis, including winning the US Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon singles championships. In addition, he made history by being the first African-American member of the U.S. Davis Cup squad.
Tiafoe and Shelton grew up in similar sporting environments. Carrington argued that it was crucial for young African-American Americans to be exposed to tennis. He emphasized the need for the older generation to share their passion for the sport with the younger ones.
