What did Liam Payne Say About His Kidney?

In the boyband’s early years, Payne was well-known as the member who abstained from alcohol since, as he said in interviews, he was born prematurely and only had one functioning kidney. However, he revealed in August 2012, “Just been for an ultrasound on my kidney turns out its fixed form when I was a baby!!! 😮 so now I have two.”

In September 2012, he admitted that both his kidneys are working:

Payne admitted in a 2021 interview that he didn’t like himself very much during the early years of his boy band, which he said were marked by “pills and booze” and “moments of suicidal ideation.” He added:

“The day the band ended, I was like, Thank the Lord, I know a lot of people are going to be mad at me for saying that, but I needed to stop or it would kill me.”

Payne admitted that he battled drinking at the height of the band’s success, when he spent a lot of time travelling through four global tours together with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The band was established on “The X Factor” in 2010 and achieved worldwide acclaim.

He said:

“In the band… the best way to secure us, because of how big we’d got, was just to lock us in our rooms. What’s in the room? A mini-bar, So at a certain point I thought, I’m just going to have a party-for-one and that seemed to carry on for many years of my life. Then you look back at how long you’ve been drinking and you’re like, ‘Jesus Christ, that’s a long time.'”

Following Malik’s departure from the band in 2015, One Direction went on an indefinite break. Since his days in One Direction, the celebrity has been candid about his battle with addiction.

Payne returned to YouTube and stated in a video that he’d realized he had “become somebody who I didn’t recognize anymore.” He said:

“I had to kind of go away to kind of get better, let’s say. The whole thing got to that point of where it was just to kind of scramble to stay relevant.”

He disclosed that he had spent nearly 100 days in a “wonderful place” in Louisiana to get his head straight. Payne also hadn’t consumed alcohol in almost six months.
