At least, that’s how Olympic gold medallist Mu sees it as she qualified for Friday’s semifinals of the women’s 800 meters at Hayward Field. She seemed to be embarrassed by questions about her connection with Miller, an 800 runner she met at Texas A&M. “Oh my god guys, stop it,” she said. She then laughed and answered many inquiries about him.
Mu, who is 5-foot-10, proclaimed triumphantly, “That’s my short king,” referring to Miller, who is 5-8. (She still does, when they’re together, wear heels. Neither one of them seemed to mind.

Miller, then just 13 years old, shocked the athletic world by running the 800 meters in a world-record time of 1 minute, 56.41 seconds. He did it again a year later, clocking in at 1 minute, 51.23 seconds. The track world quickly caught on that he was in a league of his own when compared to other kids his age.
Angela Miller, Miller’s mother, trained him in track as a kid, but she made sure he didn’t overdo it. In his first year of college, Miller broke the 1:45 barrier in the 800 meters and placed second in the NCAA. He has a 1:44.97 PB in the race. For more updates, join us on our Twitter account.
