On August 13, at 75, Thierry Despont, a renowned French architect and designer recognized for applying his eclectic classicist style to the renovation of famous buildings in the United States and France, passed away.

The French fashion designer famously shied away from the spotlight. Although he kept a quiet profile, he counted notable names like Calvin Klein, Bill and Melinda Gates, Mickey Drexler, and developers among his notable clientele.
Despont’s place of birth was Limoges, France. At a young age, he took after his architect father and began his career in what he considered the “greatest profession in the world.” Following this line of work, he attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before acquiring a master’s degree in urban planning and architecture from Harvard.
Despont was chosen as the associate architect for the Statue of Liberty restoration after he founded his business, the Office of Thierry W Despont, in 1980. Following the success of such a massive undertaking, the firm received numerous similar projects, such as the restoration of the Clayton, the Pittsburgh house of the Frick family.
Despont became known for his work renovating landmarks; he designed luxurious apartments in the Woolworth Building, oversaw the expansion of Cartier’s Fifth Avenue flagship, and was rumoured to have spent $450 million on a complete renovation of the Ritz Paris.
