New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s husband, 55-year-old Jason Cantrell, has died. The city stated on Monday informing the public of the First Gentleman’s passing.
The loss of the Mayor and his or her family is a tragic blow to the city. No one could ever forget Jason Cantrell’s tenure as First Gentleman or his services to the country. The outpouring of sympathy will honor his life and mourn his loss. As a community, we mourn this loss together and stand behind Mayor LaToya Cantrell in her time of need.
Husband of New Orleans Mayor Dies
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s husband, Jason Cantrell, has passed away. He was 55. The reason for his death is under investigation now. No official cause of death has been revealed yet.
On Monday (14 Aug), the city released a statement informing the public of the First Gentleman’s passing.
“It is with great sadness and heartache that we announce the passing of First Gentleman Jason Cantrell,” the mayor’s Director of Communications Gregory Joseph said in the statement.
The statement said, “He was a devoted husband and father, as well as a dedicated public servant who valiantly served the city’s residents alongside Mayor Cantrell, and as an experienced family, civil, and criminal attorney.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mayor Cantrell, his wife, their daughter RayAnn, and the whole Cantrell family,” the statement said. Please give them space as they go through this difficult period.

Cantrell’s cause and manner of death “remain under investigation,” according to the Orleans Parish Coroner’s office. JP Morrell, president of the New Orleans City Council, released a message on X (previously Twitter) in Cantrell’s honor. Morrell expressed how much of a loss New Orleans has sustained with Cantrell’s passing. Almost twenty years ago, we worked together in the Orleans Indigent Defender Program, the forerunner of the Orleans Public Defenders.
