David Gergen’s Journey: From Hi-Rocket to High Achievements
In Durham, North Carolina, where he grew up, Gergen attended Durham High School, a former public high school where he served as the editor of the Hi-Rocket student newspaper. He attended Yale University after finishing high school, where he majored in American studies and became a member of the Manuscript Society earning his B.A. in that year.
He served as managing editor of the Yale Daily News while an undergraduate at Yale. On its staff at the time were future senator Joe Lieberman, Stephen Bingham, Robert G. Kaiser and Paul Steiger. In 1967, Gergen graduated with an LL.B. from Harvard Law School and wed Anne Elizabeth Gergen, a native of London, England.
Gergen worked as an intern for three summers in North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford’s office, where he developed a strong interest in civil rights issues. This effort has been described by Gergen as his most satisfying experience in public service.
