Tan served with distinction in the Singapore Armed Forces from 1987 till his retirement in 2011. He worked his way up to brigadier general status. He served as Commanding Officer of the 3rd Guards Battalion, Army Attaché at the Singapore embassy in Jakarta, Commander of the 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade, Assistant Chief of the General Staff (Plans), Commander of the 3rd Division, and Commander of the Army Training and Doctrine Command, among other command and staff positions.
