A sequel to Bird Box is in the works, but in the meantime, we’re back in the real world thanks to Netflix’s Bird Box Barcelona.
Fans of the Netflix original series Bird Box may be forgiven for mistaking this new film for the anticipated sequel. It’s not a sequel, but rather a prequel or spinoff based in the same universe as the first smash blockbuster.
Nevertheless, given that Bird Box is still one of Netflix’s most-watched movies ever, a direct sequel is inevitable. After the success of the first film adaptation, novelist Josh Malerman announced in July 2020 that production on a sequel will begin.
But ever since then, radio silence. Is Bird Box 2 in the works and what role does Bird Box Barcelona play? This is all the information you’ll require.
Bird Box 2 Release Date
Bird Box 2 won’t arrive on Netflix for a time. Since we haven’t heard anything about production starting anytime soon, we probably won’t see Bird Box 2 on Netflix until late 2021 or early 2022 at the earliest. As Bird Box Barcelona is released on 14 July 2023. So it will take some time to hear the release date announcement of Bird Box 2.
There may be an even greater interval between films now, what with all the production delays occurring around the world. The longer the pandemic drags on, the more productions will be put on hold since nobody knows what will happen.

How Does the Conclusion of Bird Box Build Up a Sequel?

By the film’s conclusion, Malorie and her two kids (well, one’s hers and one’s adopted) had arrived at Rick’s refuge, only to learn that it serves as a school for the visually impaired. The school is guarded by birds that can detect the presence of the force and sound the alarm for the sighted students and staff.
It would be a fair bet that the sequel will follow the tried and true path of Malorie’s sanctuary turning out to be everything but safe. The world could end dreadfully, forcing Malorie and the rest of the survivors to face it once more.
Both of these concepts fail to excite us, although they do provide possible avenues for a sequel. The lack of an explanation for the force itself has been cited as one of the most prominent criticisms of Bird Box. A spinoff sequel may examine its roots by rewinding to the beginning of the outbreak, or it could follow Malorie as she investigates the creatures while continuing to keep her children safe.
Since the movie and the book had different conclusions, adapting Malerman’s follow-up novel would require some reworking, but it’s certainly doable. We have also covered all details about Bird Box Barcelona ending.
