Kathryn Burgum is the wife of Doug Burgum. On December 15, 2016, Kathryn was appointed First Lady. As first lady, she has made eradicating the stigma and humiliation associated with the chronἰc dἰsease of addiction in North Dakota’s communities a top focus.
She shares her own experience and urges others to do the same to normalize the dἰsease of addiction. She has been in long-term recovery for 21 years. She is promoting the idea that addiction is a long-term illness and not a personal failure.
As the head of the Advisory Council, Kathryn actively supports the Office of Recovery Reinvented. Through her advocacy efforts, she has had the opportunity to collaborate with other activists, subject-matter specialists and stakeholders around the country including the White House, Faces and Voices of Recovery, the Addiction Policy Forum and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, where she is a board trustee.
Kathryn, the second youngest of four kids was raised in Jamestown, North Dakota where her family had been working with John Deere for more than 35 years. She started working at the family firm in the components division.
She attended Jamestown High School where she participated in cheerleading, choir, varsity tennis and student council and she graduated with honors. Her 25-year career in marketing and human resources has included work in the retail, biotechnology, software, manufacturing, agriculture and real estate development sectors.
