Julie Garwood Obituary

American author Julia Elizabeth Garwood produced over 27 rómance books in the suspense and historical subgenres. Her works have sold over 35 million copies worldwide and she has at least 24 New York Times bestsellers.

On June 8, 2023, she pἀssed away at home, according to a Facebook post that was uploaded on her official account.

Julie Garwood, the sixth of seven children in a big Irish family was born Julia Elizabeth Murphy and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She had one brother and five sisters.

She was the daughter of Felicita “Flip” Murphy and Thomas Murphy. Because she missed so much school after undergoing a tonsillectomy at age six, she did not pick up reading as quickly as other kids her age.

Sister Elizabeth, a math teacher spent the entire summer of that particular year teaching Garwood how to read and how to love the books she was reading. Garwood named her daughter Elizabeth after this teacher since she had such a profound effect on her life.

Garwood, who was pursuing a degree in nursing but grew interested in history after taking a Russian history course decided to double major in nursing and history. Because of the caliber of her essays, a lecturer persuaded Garwood to start writing.

She had three children Elizabeth Ashley, Bryan Michael and Gerald. The family lived in the Kansas City of Leawood. Garwood enjoyed writing, but she had no plans to become a professional writer.

She accepted several freelance writing gigs while still a young wife and mother, and she also penned lengthier pieces for fun. Garwood started going to local writer’s conferences once her youngest child entered school, where she soon found an agency.

Her historical novel and children’s book were both successful thanks to the agency and the publisher soon asked for additional historical romances.

Despite her popularity as a historical romance author, Garwood switched gears and started penning modern romantic suspense books. Heartbreaker, her debut novel for the modern day was optioned for a movie and serialized in Cosmopolitan.
