According to police, on June 2, a semi-tractor being operated by a 59-year-old Brian Du Frane Kaukauna man strμck and kἰlled 9-year-old Mackenzie Van Eperen when she crossed the road.
The girl was transferred to a nearby hospital, where she eventually pἀssed away as a result of her w0unds. The driver has not been subjected to any enforcement action. Leticia Nino is the parent of a Janssen Elementary student.
She had a child who was in Mackenzie’s grade and had attended the same first-grade class.
Several minutes after the coIIision, she also witnessed the incident. She said:
“They had their last day of classes on Thursday, June 1 and this incident occurred on next afternoon. However, I didn’t see the actual incἰdent. She was already lying down.”
Nino continued:
“Just before 3:10 p.m. on Friday, June 2, while I drove with my daughter, I saw something’s going on there we thought. Since we couldn’t see the entire body, we didn’t assume it was a youngster. However, we could see the tractor-trailer parked closer and to the side.”
“At the time, we paid it no mind. The reason we witnessed CPR being performed was because we speculated that someone may have fallen asleep in the street.”
Later, they discovered that the b0dy was Van Eperen’s and that she had pἀssed away soon after being taken to the hospital. Nino said:
“My chest fell. I knew that young girl and when we told my daughter about it, she knew who she was and could somewhat understand what was happening. It was really awful news. She did indeed take it a little hard.
Nino saw Van Eperen frequently when she worked at Janssen Elementary School, despite the fact that her daughter was no longer in the same class. She had fond memories of Van Eperen as a compassionate individual.
On Sunday, June 4 Mackenzie’s girl scout unit also came together to create memorial stones and raise money for the Van Eperen family in her honor.
