The Little Mermaid, which made $38 million on Friday, May 26, is outpacing the competition at the box office for the Memorial Day weekend.
The live-action adaptation of the classic animated movie from Disney is surging to a better-than-anticipated $125 million+ opening, ranking it as the fourth-biggest Christmas opening of all time, unadjusted for inflation. Some estimates even put the movie’s gross at above $130 million, but Disney is being conservative and estimating a $120 million to $130 million range.
The Little Mermaid is the first 2023 summer blockbuster to specifically target females, who made up 68 percent of Friday ticket buyers and received a favorable A CinemaScore.
The acclaimed animated picture from Disney is being recreated in live-action under Rob Marshall’s direction. Halle Bailey plays Ariel in the new version of The Little Mermaid. Ariel is a brave young mermaid who strikes a perilous bargain with the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) to experience life on dry land and get to know the handsome Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King). The bond, however, greatly imperils her father’s aquatic realm.

Daveed Diggs, Javier Bardem, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, and Art Malik are also featured in the cast. Critics have praised Bailey’s portrayal of Ariel despite racial reaction on social media over using a Black actress in the lead role. Disney executives are waiting to see how the movie does in a few international markets but do not anticipate these protests negatively impacting the movie in North America.

The Little Mermaid was projected to bring in $120 million throughout the four-day holiday. With a $160.5 million opening weekend, Top Gun: Maverick from last year beat out Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End from 2007 and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull from 2008 as the biggest Memorial Day weekend debuts ever.

The 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand ($122 million) should fall to fourth position in favor of The Little Mermaid. Fast & Furious 6 from 2013 is in fifth place with 117 million dollars. Little Mermaid’s international debut is expected to gross $80 million through Sunday. Fast X from Universal has made over $500 million worldwide in its first 12 days of release and will undoubtedly take second place.

The live-action “The Little Mermaid” will be another wonderful addition to the list of classic Disney flicks. Are you ready for some live-action Disney drama? We hope that this information is helpful to you. If you enjoyed this piece, please comment below and visit our website for future updates.
