In addition to some of the more jovial aspects of the cartoons, the first movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, closely follows the plot from the Mirage comic books. The movie chronicles the history of Splinter and the Turtles, including their first meetings with The Shredder and his Foot Clan, April O’Neil (Judith Hoag), Casey Jones (Elias Koteas), and Casey Jones.

The movie, which was directed by Steve Barron and distributed by New Line Cinema, highlights the inventive puppetry methods used by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
