Jamie’s father appears to be in rehab in Episode 11 following the events of the first two seasons. James was punched by Jamie the last time we saw him at Wembley following Richmond’s defeat. He wandered the streets and eventually caught up with Coach Beard, but a kind stranger put him to sleep.
A central theme of the penultimate episode is Jamie’s struggle to discover his light without having to contend with his father’s shadow.
He says to his mother, “I thought I was finally rid of him, but I always did what I did because… f*ck him, and now that I don’t give a sh*t about him, it’s like… you know when some guys can’t make their willies go hard? It’s like I’ve got that in my soul.” She says he won’t “never, ever change,” but Jamie has consistently disproven her.
She also claims that his father will be “pissed in the stands, rooting against him,” yet he is absent during the game. Shouts from his former City supporters greet Jamie as he exits the field, and two men carrying hip flasks can be seen. One remark, “He’s a tough child.” The other responds, “His dad would’ve been proud.”
Like the rest of us, you probably believed he had pἀssed away. He’s alive and well, which is a blessing. While we don’t know the details, he appears in a rehab or care facility surrounded by people enjoying tea and biscuits while watching the game. The most excellent part is that he seems happy to see Jamie, even though he is on the opposing team.
