Everything in the Yellowstone cosmos is always changing. It’s also becoming increasingly complicated to keep track of the interconnections between the numerous personalities.
We don’t expect the world to get any less complicated anytime soon, what with Taylor Sheridan’s creation having grown to encompass the Dutton family origin tale in 1883 and 1923 and with more installments (1883: The Bass Reeves tale and 6666) on the way.
Even some of the show’s stars have stated that they have tr0uble keeping track of who is related to whom and we assume that Taylor Sheridan is purposefully about some of the connections but have no fear: we’re here to help with our Dutton family tree.
James Dutton
Tim McGraw, a huge name in country music plays a Civil War veteran who moves his family to the American West in 1883. John Dutton Sr., Elsa and Spencer are his children with his wife Margaret.
Season 4 of Yellowstone features additional appearances by the character in flashback settings. James’s sister Claire appears in 1883 and his brother Jacob appears in 1923.
Margaret Dutton
Faith Hill, James’s real-life girlfriend plays James’s fictional wife Margaret. She is a courageous mother of three (named Elsa, Spencer and John) who travels with James on their dangerous trek west and ultimately settles in Montana.
Jacob Dutton
In 1923, James Dutton looks up to his brother Jacob (Harrison Ford). They did not have any of their own, but he and his wife Cara were instrumental in the upbringing of his nephews.
Cara Dutton
Cara, portrayed by Helen Mirren is yet another powerful and self-reliant lady in the Dutton lineage. After Jacob is hurt, Sarah assumes charge of the property and has her nephew Spencer return to offer his assistance.
Claire Dutton
The journey ends tragἰcally for Claire (Dawn Olivieri) and her daughter Mary Abel who accompany James and his family.
Mary Abel Dutton
Claire’s only surviving child, Mary Abel (Emma Malouff) dἰes in 1883. Her mother takes her own life because she is so broken up at the deἀth of her daughter.
Elsa Dutton
Throughout both time periods, we hear from Elsa (Isabel May), the daughter of James and Margaret who is the narrator. She is a brave and independent young lady who falls in love with the charismatic Sam only to have their romance cut short by trἀgedy.
Sam
The Dutton family runs into Sam, a Comanche wἀrrior played by Martin Sensmeier in 1883. He and Elsa eventually fall in love and marry secretly.
John Dutton Sr.
Between the years 1883 and 1923, only John survives. Audie Rick plays him as a kid in 1883 and James Badge Dale plays him as an ἀdult in 1923. He’s been married to Emma since 1923 and the couple has a son, Jack. Whether or not John and Emma are the bi0logical parents of John Jr. is not made known.
Emma Dutton
As far as we are aware, Jack is the only child of John Sr. and Emma (Marley Shelton). No one knows how she is connected to John Jr. or John III.
Spencer Dutton
Spencer is the brother of Elsa and the older John. He’s a large game hunteɼ by trade and a former soldier who’s been called back from Africa to assist the family farm. Spencer meets and falls for Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) in Africa and the two eventually return to Montana to assist his family.
Alex Dutton
Free-spirited Alex and Spencer made a daring escape to Africa. After a grueling voyage, the couple became engaged and the captain wedded them. Alex and Spencer are on the road to Montana, where they plan to spend time with Spencer’s relatives.
Jack Dutton
Jack was raised on the ranch by his parents, John Sr. and Emma. They have recently become engaged. Some fans assume he is John Jr. because Jack is a common short form of John’s name although this has not been confirmed.
Elizabeth Strafford
In 1923, Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) makes an appearance as Jack’s fiancee. Before she was hurt in the ambush by the sheep farmers who also kἰlled her father, the two were engaged to be married. After a terrἰble event, Elizabeth and Jack say their vows to each other and Elizabeth tells Cara the happy news that she is pregnant.
John Dutton, Jr.
The older version of this character has been seen in Yellowstone, leading to the assumption that he is John Sr.’s son and John III.’s father. Since he has not been seen in 1923, his precise position in the family tree is currently unknown.
Dutton, Lee
The oldest Dutton sibling, Dave Annabel was kἰlled in the first season during a livestock dispute. John Dutton IV worked as a livestock agent and was planning to take over the family ranch from his father.
Dutton, Beth
Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) is the only child and business partner of the Duttons. When anyone threatens her family, especially her adopted brother Jamie, the self-proclaimed “tornado” spares no one. In season 4, Beth wed her longtime beau Rip Wheeler in a nontraditional wedding.
Button, Kayce
The youngest Dutton sibling played by Luke Grimes is caught between commitments to his father, John III and his wife, Monica and their son, Tate. After spending some time away from the ranch, he is ready to come back and run things while Rip is gone with the cattle.
Monique Dutton
Despite everything that Monica (Kelsey Asbille) has been through, she is still committed to her husband Kayce and can appreciate his love for his family. She was brought up on the Broken Rock Reservation and l0st a child in a tragἰc trἀgedy in the fifth season.
Jamie Dutton
Jamie (Wes Bentley), who was adopted by John and Evelyn was brought up as a member of the family. He went to law school and eventually turned against his father, advocating for his impeachment. After mating with Christina, he gave birth to a child they have yet to name.
