The Power Rangers 30th anniversary Mighty Morphin special has finally come on Netflix and fans have been counting down the days. The original MMPR ensemble reunites for one final hour-long adventure in Once & Always, in which they take on their earliest adversary once again.
If you’re a fan of the original Power Rangers, you’ll get a real kick out of this special, but you should know that it gets a little darker than you might recall. One character is really killed in this installment, which is unusual for the series.
To be more specific, it’s Yellow Ranger Trini Kwan, whose deἀth was foreshadowed in the special’s promotional materials and thus is not a spoiler. However, Trini’s demise is never addressed in Once & For All.
In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & For All, how does Trini Kwan meet her end?
Rita Repulsa (Barbara Goodson), now a robot, is out for revenge on the Power Rangers when the special begins, and the reconstituted team must fight her head-on. Rita casts a lethal spell from her wand, and Billy Cranston (David Yost) is in the line of fire until Trini leaps in front of him. Robo Rita quickly vaporizes her, leaving the Rangers in shock.
After Zordon had sacrificed himself to stop Rita and the Evil Alliance in the Power Rangers in Space finale, a flashback revealed that it was Billy who had unwittingly brought Rita’s evil spirit back to life. The sorrow he feels for Trini’s teen daughter Minh (Charlie Kersch) causes Billy to withdraw from his responsibilities as her primary caregiver and instead leave her in the hands of Black Ranger Zack Taylor (Walter Emmanuel Jones).
While previous Rangers have perished in the course of duty, including Kendrix the Pink Ranger in Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy or the rebooted Billy Cranston in 2017’s Power Rangers movie, Trini’s deἀth in Once & Always is a first for the franchise.

When Minh becomes the new Yellow Ranger, she is able to tap into her mother’s memories, and it is indicated that Trini’s spirit lives on within the Morphin Grid, the source of the Rangers’ power (like to how Jedi become one with the Force in Star Wars).
The Mighty Morphin star who played Trini Kwan, Thuy Trang, tragically lost her life at age 27 in a car accident in 2001. Both she and Jason David Frank (Tommy the Green Ranger), who both went away in November 2022, are honored in this episode.
