Peterson’s parents, Lee Arthur Peterson (an entrepreneur who ran a crate-packaging company) and Jacqueline “Jackie” Helen Latham (who ran a shop in La Jolla) gave birth to him on October 24, 1972 at Sharp Coronado Hospital in San Diego, California.

Scott was Lee and Jackie’s only child together. They had six children from previous relationships. Peterson and his half-brother John used to sleep in the same room in the family’s two-bedroom La Jolla condominium when they were kids.

Spending time with his dad inspired him to pick up golf at a young age. By the time he was 14 years old, he had his father beaten. Peterson once hoped to make a living as a professional golfer at the University of San Diego High School, he played alongside Phil Mickelson who went on to a successful career in the sport.

He had become one of San Diego’s best junior golfers by the time he graduated high school. In 1990, Peterson took advantage of a golf scholarship to attend Arizona State University where Mickelson was already a student.

On April 18, 2003, police located Peterson near a La Jolla golf course and detained him. He told the cops that he was going to play golf with his dad and brother. His dark brown hair was now bleached blonde and he had a full beard and mustache.

His Mercedes-Benz was overstuffed with various items including approximately $15,000 in cash, twelve Viagra tablets, survival gear, camping equipment, numerous changes of clothes, four cell phones and both his and his brother’s driver’s licenses.

Peterson’s father said that his son had been living in his car because of the media attention and that he had used his brother’s license to gain a San Diego resident discount at the golf course the day before. Prosecutors later agreed with police that these goods suggested Peterson was planning to flee to Mexico.

Peterson appeared in Stanislaus County Superior Court before Judge Nancy Ashley on April 21, 2003 for his arraignment. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murdeɼ in the deἀth of Laci and second-degree murdeɼ in the deἀth of Conner, both felonies requiring a showing of premeditation and exceptional circumstances.
