Shaquille O’Neal has stated that he prefers to let his actions speak for themselves in regard to his weight loss quest. The 51-year-old former NBA great recently gushed about his progress in diet and exercise, telling the magazine that he has lost 40 pounds so far.

O’Neal acknowledges that as a young athlete, he didn’t put much thought into the nutritional worth of his food. Now that he was in the league, he could get away with eating McDonald’s, fried foods, and fatty snacks as long as he kept up his impressive on-court performance.

The ex-Lakers athlete claims he never gained weight despite eating anything he wanted and practicing for as long as five hours every day. He didn’t learn the value of educating himself on how to prioritize a good diet until later in life.

My only regret is that I didn’t pay closer attention. According to O’Neal’s interview with PEOPLE, his mental toughness allowed him to disregard such distractions. Someone on our squad had a body fat percentage of 2%. The coach advised, “You need to eat healthily.”

I used to joke with my coach that we should each order something different for lunch. And I’ll still kick his a** on the court the next day.”

The NBA on TNT commentator says he remains goal-oriented even after retirement.

He jokes, “I get a little jealous when I see these young guys on Instagram with their little six-packs, and so my goal is to one day be able to do an underwear ad with my sons — 51 years old, just muscles everywhere.”

O’Neal is continuing his weight training and doing cardio at least three times a week in an effort to reach his goal. After settling on a healthy diet, he has also made progress.

“I feel revitalized. Now I’m feeling fantastic. I get the chance to try new experiences. And it’s a great way to improve your self-discipline,” he continues. “I used to eat four or five times a day, but now I only eat junk food twice a day.”

So now I can have a smoothie for breakfast and head straight to the gym. The second course will most likely be mini egg wraps. O’Neal continues, “On day three, we’ll have a salad, and on days four and five, we’ll have chicken and steak.

If I watch what I eat, I can still eat. Also, don’t waste time on trivia. There will be no more sweets or salty snacks. So, the more self-control you can exert, the sooner you’ll observe positive changes.

In addition to making modifications to his diet and exercise routine, O’Neal became a brand ambassador for Novex Biotech after crediting the company’s range of men’s performance products with aiding in his weight loss.

“I weighed about 410–415 pounds when I was first introduced to Novex Biotech. I’m down in the low 370s, but I want to get to the 350s,” he says.

Saying, “So I still have 20 lbs. The reason I joined Novex Biotech. O’Neal said he is releasing the “Shaq Pack” because he wants to provide “guys my age or any guy that really, really works” with a product.

“I’m not now on a strict diet or encouraging everyone to go to the gym like a maniac. “But get moving and eat as healthily as you can,” he says.

O’Neal says he stays driven to drop more weight by being jealous of anyone who looks better than him, and he does this by educating himself on what will help him feel and look younger (he jokes that he’s aiming to be like Benjamin Button).

“That’s what competition’s all about,” he says. To paraphrase, “When I see these guys looking all ripped on the Gram, I be like, ‘Damn, I’m going to try that,’ even though I already have my own workout stuff.” So, in my view, it’s all about inspiration.

O’Neal says he’s ready to get back to his home gym and finish losing those remaining 20 pounds after taking some time off to recover from his recent hip surgery.

I still have that one goal, just to rip it up,” he told. I may only have a 4-and-a-half pack right now, but I want the world to know how proud I am of it. I’ve been dropping hints here and there, but now is when I truly start to destroy it.

“I’m about to really chop it up,” O’Neal says. Just take my word for it.
