On Friday, April 14, Southern Illinois University Carbondale will be closed. The institution said that the closure was necessary due to a campus-wide Ameren power outage.
The substations that caused the outage have sustained significant damage reports indicate. All classes, whether in-person, hybrid or online, will be canceled; remote delivery will not be allowed.
The Department of Public Safety and residential dining facilities will remain open, according to SIU. Except for a small number of already scheduled events, including the following, all other campus buildings and offices will be closed:
- The scheduled New Student Orientation will take place at Shryock Auditorium.
- The Men of Color Campus to Career Conference will go place as planned but at Grinnell Hall instead.
- The scheduled athletic events will go on as planned.
- Evening activities at the Student Center, such as the SIH Gala, will go on as scheduled until the power problem is fixed.
The university anticipates that the power outage will be fixed by Saturday, at which point the regular business will resume.
