A lawsuit filed in Florida last month on behalf of Dwayne Haskins’s wife Kalabrya and his parents alleges that Haskins was drugg*d, blackmailed and robbed prior to his death by a dump truck on a South Florida highway a year ago this past Sunday.

Without providing specifics, the lawsuit claims that four of the fourteen defendants—Karlee Peyton, Joey Smith, Meriem Yassine, and Wissal Yassine—drugg*d Haskins “to extort and loot him causing him and/or contributing to cause him significant pain and death.”

The lawsuit further claims that Oriel Patino, the dump truck’s driver, “failed to maintain” the vehicle’s brakes and tires and was “driving dangerously”

Patino who did not wish to comment to the Washington Post is not accused in the lawsuit of drugging, blackmailing, or robbing Haskins.

Haskins, a first-round pick by Washington in 2019 who played for the Steelers in 2021, was fatally injured on April 9, 2022 when he was hit while crossing the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport.

He was 24. Two blood samples taken from Haskins were reported to have a BAC of.20 and.24 by the medical examiner, which is more than three times the.08 limits in Florida.

Haskins’s blood also reacted positively to the medications ketamine and norketamine, which have both recreational and medical use.

“As to what occurred in the hours before Dwayne was killed, many questions remain unanswered,” Rick Ellsley of the Ellsley Law Firm, who filed the suit, said in a statement. “It is believed that Dwayne was targeted and drugg*d as part of a blackmail and robbery conspiracy. In fact, his highly-expensive watch was stolen from him shortly before his death.”

Haskins’s automobile reportedly ran out of gas, according to his wife’s 911 call from last April. According to the medical examiner’s report, a “female friend” who was in Haskins’ car on the side of the road said that Haskins was seeking gas.

“Failed to avoid hitting the Plaintiff who was visible and avoidable had the Defendant operated his dump truck with due care,” the lawsuit said, referring to the plaintiff.

“Many questions remain as to why the truck driver did not avoid hitting Dwayne given the highly visible activity in the area before the impact and the fact that the other drivers did not hit Dwayne,” Ellsley said.

“The truck driver’s cell phone records have not yet been disclosed. The report also notes that the driver refused to provide a blood sample to the police at the scene and still has not provided the alcohol test results.”

Haskins was picked with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft after a stellar collegiate career at Ohio State. Before joining the Steelers, he started 13 games in two years for Washington.
