Christopher Nolan is penning and directing a biopic titled Oppenheimer. It was inspired by the biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett and Kenneth Branagh.
Murphy plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist known as the father of the atomic bomb for his role in the Manhattan Project, the World War II effort that created the first nuclear weapons.
Nolan, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven served as producers and the picture is a collaboration between Universal Pictures, Syncopy Inc. and Atlas Entertainment.
In September of 2021, it was revealed that Nolan would be penning and helming a biopic on J. Robert Oppenheimer during WWII with Universal Pictures as the studio handling distribution. Between September 2021 and April 2022, several prominent actors and actresses signed on.
Production began in late February 2022 and ended in May of that year, with pre-production commencing in January. It was shot in a variety of film formats including IMAX 65mm, 65mm large-format film and for the first time, IMAX black-and-white analog photography.
Nolan’s use of physical effects and minimal CGI is consistent with his past films.
