The deἀth of a Chicago fire lieutenant was explained by the results of an autopsy performed on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 morning. Jan Tchoryk dἰed of hypertensive-arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to the Chicago County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Reports indicate that, On April 6 morning at 7:20, CFD workers responded to the 1200 block of North Lake Shore Drive for a still and box call. Not long after that, a mayday was issued for a downed firefighter. Lt. Jan Tchoryk, according to the Chicago Fire Department, was attempting to reach the 27th floor via the stairwell when he descended on the 11th floor.
His coworkers hurried him to the lobby, where they performed CPR. According to CFD, he succumbed to his w0unds. The CFD reported that the fire was extinguished at first and that they were only fighting hot spots. However, the blaze resumed shortly before 9:00 a.m. on April 6 spreading to a second apartment and releasing massive flames.
CFD no longer has access to the elevators and the building’s management claims there are no sprinklers in the apartment levels. Accidental starting from combustibles being too close to a heat-generating device, the Chicago Fire Department said on Thursday, April 6, 2023.
According to CFD, Tchoryk is an experienced rider, Navy veteran and member of a large family. His son is now an officer in the Chicago Police Department.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said:
“It’s a very difficult time for the Chicago Fire Department and a very difficult time and day for our city, It is unprecedented to lose two firefighters in back-to-back days. In different circumstances, but each of them responding to a call to serve and responding to the aid of others.
“People that they didn’t know – because that’s what the job demands and that’s what they signed up for.”
