Since joining the office of the New York State Attorney General in 1999, he has held the positions of Deputy Attorney General in Charge of the Nassau County Area and Assistant Attorney General in Charge of Affirmative Litigation for both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. From then on, until 2006, he worked as the Nassau County region’s Associate Attorney General.
Merchan was appointed to the Family Court of the City of New York, Bronx County, by then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2006. The year 2009 marked the end of his tenure. Acting Justice in the New York State Supreme Court, New York County, Criminal Division since that same year under Chief Administrative Judge Ann Pfau’s appointment. In his capacity as an Acting Justice, Merchan presides over trials involving serious crimes.
While also serving as an Acting Judge on the New York Supreme Court, Merchan also presided over the New York Court of Claims. He was put in charge by Governor David Paterson in 2009 and stayed there till 2018.

According to her LinkedIn page, she started out working for the firm as Director of Digital Persuasion in Kamala Harris’ 2020 Presidential campaign. As she ran for Vice President alongside Joe Biden, she kept working with Harris.

The Trump Administration’s Accusations against the Merchans
President Trump claimed that the case was part of a wider conspiracy since the judge had ties to Kamala Harris and other Democrats.
He said:
“And this is where we are right now. I have a Trump-hating judge with a Trump-hating wife and family, whose daughter worked for Kamala Harris and now receives money from the Biden-Harris campaign, and a lot of it.”

Eric Trump, Donald’s second son, claimed that Biden’s goal throughout the case was to diminish Donald Trump’s political influence by using Loren Merchan’s career as evidence.
According to Mediate’s reporting, Trump also stated that Juan Merchan presided over the tax fraud trial involving the Trump Organization. He then posted images of Loren Merchan on social media, which might be interpreted as an attempt to intimidate.

As a result, Judge Juan Merchan cautioned the ex-President to refrain from making threats online. He warned that violent reactions to the offensive comments were possible. Yet, the judge did not issue a blanket gag order.
