Authorities say Oregon Ducks tight end Spencer Webb d!ed on Wednesday from a brain injury sustained in a fall at Triangle Lake in western Oregon. Webb, who was 22 at the time, was about to begin his sixth year as a student-athlete.

On Thursday, after disclosing details of the event on Wednesday night, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Webb’s identity. Webb’s dea†h was earlier verified by his family and high school football coaches, according to comments made to the Sacramento Bee.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., police were called to the scene of an incident at Triangle Lake. local time on Wednesday after reports of an injury near the rock slides prompted the sheriff’s office to investigate. Visitors at Triangle Lake use the sloping rock formations known as “rock slides” as “natural water slides” while enjoying the surrounding waterfalls and swimming areas.

Webb had been “recreating in the area” before falling and hurting his head, and when deputies came, they found him unconscious “about 100 yards down a steep trail.” Webb was beyond saving.

As the sheriff’s office had not discovered any signs of foul play as of their most recent update, they ruled Webb’s dea†h an apparent accident.
