Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Opens With a $40m Gross

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will win the weekend box office competition, which is on track to debut to a better-than-anticipated $40 million.

The new Paramount and eOne film made $15.3 million on Friday (31 March), with $5.6 million coming from previews this week, $4.1 million from Thursday night performances (30 March), and $7 million from special showing earlier in the week. The action epic was added to 3,855 venues on Friday morning, including numerous premium-format screens.

Based on the popular role-playing game from Hasbro, Dungeons & Dragons is directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley and stars a star-studded ensemble including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head, and Hugh Grant.

Goldstein and Daley, who directed the movie from a script they co-wrote with Michael Gilio and who also helmed Game Night, are back together.

The film has received excellent reviews with a CinemaScore of A. The high-profile fantasy film, which reportedly cost $150 million to develop before marketing, was co-produced and co-financed by Paramount and eOne, owned by Hasbro.

Additionally, the movie opens in more than 50 foreign territories, including the U.K., where eOne is handling distribution. The foundation of Dungeons & Dragons is the landmark board game initially released in 1974. In addition to other media, the game later inspired books, TV series, video games, and movies, notably New Line’s unsuccessful 2000 film.

If everything goes according to plan, Paramount and eOne will begin a new film franchise with Honor Among Thieves. In either case, it broadens Hasbro’s total D&D universe.

Converting games (whether video games or tabletop games) for the big screen has never been easy, but there have recently been some significant success stories in the video game industry, such as the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise from Paramount and Sony’s Uncharted, which had a $44 million launch last year.
