At the age of 17, American citizen Kyle Howard Rittenhouse (born January 3, 2003) opened fire during civil unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, k!lling two of the persons he shot. Rittenhouse testified that he had acted in self-defense during his trial in November 2021, and the jury agreed.
The trial against Rittenhouse received extensive coverage and became a cause célèbre for media and groups with right-wing ideologies. After his trial, he participated in several events organized by conservative groups and people.
They included a meeting with former president Donald Trump, an appearance on Tucker Carlson’s show, and a few cameos in Turning Point USA films. Fans have used merchandise using Rittenhouse’s likeness, mainly T-shirts, to make a profit. In 2022, he unveiled a video game, Kyle Rittenhouse’s Turkey Shoot, to collect money for his legal defense as he prepared to challenge the media for slander in civil court.

Kyle Howard Rittenhouse was born to Michael and Wendy Rittenhouse on January 3, 2003, in Antioch, Illinois. His parents tied the knot in February of 2000 in Lake County, Illinois, three years before he was born. He’s the middle child between his older and younger sisters. By 2014, his parents had already divorced.
Rittenhouse joined the Explorers program at the Grayslake Police Department and the cadet program at the Antioch Fire Department as a freshman in high school because he was interested in a career as a paramedic or police officer. After only one semester at Lakes Community High School in 2017–2018, he decided to leave and enroll in online classes instead.
He made several posts on public-facing social media sites indicating an interest in a career in law enforcement. As of December 2018, Rittenhouse had started a Facebook fundraiser for the charity Humanizing the Badge. Other posts focused on “honoring police, with Blue Lives Matter graphics, photos of officers k!lled in the line of duty, and the “thin blue line” flag associated with support for law enforcement.”
Internships in Politics and Eponymous legislation
Many Republican legislators have publicly offered internships to Rittenhouse. Two days before the verdict was announced, on November 17, 2021, Florida State Representative Matt Gaetz offered him an internship. Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona responded that he would arm wrestle Rep. Gaetz for the internship opportunity to work with intern Rittenhouse.
Congressman Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina offered Rittenhouse an internship on the day the jury pronounced him not guilty of all charges. Colorado State Representative Lauren Boebert responded to Cawthorn’s offer during an interview with Newsmax by challenging the wheelchair-bound lawmaker to “a run” to hire Rittenhouse as an intern.

Violence breaks out in Kenosha
Rittenhouse, then 17 years old, opened fire on three men on August 25, 2020, amid social turmoil in Kenosha, Wisconsin, which followed the police shooting of a black man, Jacob Blake. Rittenhouse, a white American, was among a group of gun-toting residents in Kenosha who said they were protecting local businesses and were equipped with an AR-15-style weapon.
Rittenhouse fatally shot the man who had chased him into the parking lot and grabbed the barrel of his firearm. Rittenhouse ran away, but the throng soon caught up with him. After another man attacked Rittenhouse with a skateboard and tried to steal his firearm, Rittenhouse fatally shot the other man. As he was approached with a firearm pointing at him, Rittenhouse shot and wounded a third person.

Rittenhouse began taking online classes at Arizona State University as a non-degree-seeking student in October 2021; he later expressed interest in switching to in-person classes but was denied admission due to the university’s “modified admissions process” for non-degree-seeking students rather than the full admissions process for degree-seeking students.
