American astronomer, author, and scientific communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson were born on October 5, 1958. Tyson attended three prestigious universities: Harvard, UT Austin, and Columbia. His postdoctoral research associateship at Princeton University lasted from 1991 to 1994.

In 1994, he became a staff scientist at the Hayden Planetarium and a visiting research scientist and lecturer on the Princeton faculty. In 1996, he was appointed director of the planetarium, and he directed the $210 million renovation that was finished in 2000.

He has headed the Hayden Planetarium at New York’s Rose Center for Earth and Space since 1996. Tyson established the Department of Astrophysics in 1997 and has served as a research associate there since 2003; the facility is located within the American Museum of Natural History.

Tyson was the middle child of three in his Bronx-based family and was born in Manhattan. His father, the African-American sociologist Cyril deGrasse Tyson (1927-2016), served as the inaugural Director of Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited and as human resources commissioner for New York City mayor John Lindsay.

His mother, Sunchita Maria Tyson (née Feliciano; born 1928), is Puerto Rican and worked as a gerontologist for the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Lynn Antipas Tyson and Stephen Joseph Tyson are Tyson’s brothers and sisters.

The deGrasse in Tyson’s middle name comes from his paternal grandmother’s maiden name; she was given the name Amelia de Grasse when she was born on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies.

The observations in cosmology, star evolution, galactic astronomy, bulges, and stellar creation have all been fundamental to Tyson’s work. In addition to his time spent at the University of Maryland and Princeton University, he has also worked at the American Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planetarium.

As a research affiliate at Princeton University, Tyson began working at the Hayden Planetarium as a staff scientist in 1994. In June of 1995, he was named acting director of the planetarium before being officially named director the following year.

He directed the $210 million renovation of the planetarium, which was finished in the year 2000. When asked what he felt about taking on the role of director, Tyson responded, “I’ll never forget the time and effort the scientists and teachers at the Hayden Planetarium put into enlightening me when I was a kid. And now that I am its director, I am reminded of the kindness and service that I received when I was a patient there many years ago”.
