A longtime association between Johnson and Malcolm X stretches back to the 1940s when Malcolm X was a street hustler known as “Detroit Red” because of his red hair. In 1964, after Malcolm X broke away from the leadership of the Nation of Islam, Johnson offered to defend him.

Yet Malcolm X warned Johnson that keeping company with him would hurt his reputation, so Johnson eventually cut ties with Malcolm X’s security team. The Nation of Islam killed Malcolm X two weeks later.
