Gwyneth Paltrow’s First Appearance on the Screen

She got her start in show business thanks to her famous parents. She made her acting debut in High (1989), a TV film her father directed and she made her professional stage debut at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts in 1990, after spending several summers there watching her mother perform.

Her first film was the John Travolta-starring musical romance Shout and her godfather Steven Spielberg cast her as little Wendy Darling in the financially successful adventure flick Hook.

In 1996, Paltrow played the titular character in the historical film adaptation Emma, based on the 1815 novel of the same name by Jane Austen.

Director Douglas McGrath opted to bring in Paltrow to audition for the part of Emma Woodhouse, after a suggestion from his agent and after witnessing her performance in Flesh & Bone.

It was stated in 2004 that since Paltrow’s Oscar win for Shakespeare in Love, her film career had been less notable and critical appreciation had decreased.

She agreed with her peers that the victory is a curse in some ways because she was ill-prepared for it and made some poor film choices as a result. In 2008, Paltrow’s career took off again after she was cast as Pepper Potts in the Marvel film Iron Man.

Potts is Tony Stark’s assistant, best friend and possible love interest. The role of Maya Ganesh, a new-age caricature was a two-episode storyline for Paltrow in the improvisational online series Web Therapy in 2014.
