On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, Gwyneth Paltrow’s trial began over her 2016 skiing accident. The actress and entrepreneur was present in the courthouse in Park City, Utah, as the jury was being selected and keynote speeches were being made.
Paltrow has been accused of causing significant injuries to 76-year-old skier Terry Sanderson in a February 2016 collision while the two were on a Utah mountain.
The initial court records filed by Sanderson and acquired by CNN in 2019 state that Paltrow skied out of control, slamming him down hard, knocking him out and inflicting brain damage and four fractured ribs and other serious injuries while the two were skiing at Deer Valley Resort.
Sanderson further alleges that Paltrow and her ski instructor skied away from the scene of the accident without providing him with medical attention.
According to Paltrow’s countersuit:
“She was enjoying skiing with her family on vacation in Utah, when Plaintiff who was uphill from Ms. Paltrow – plowed into her back. She sustained a full body blow”.
“Ms. Paltrow was angry with Plaintiff and said so. Plaintiff apologized. She was shaken and upset, and quit skiing for the day even though it was still morning”.
According to court papers, Sanderson initially sued Paltrow for $3.1 million dollars but has since revised his complaint and is now seeking more than $300,000.
Paltrow is requesting a monetary settlement of $1.00 USD, plus costs and attorney’s fees. The judge gave the eight-person jury instructions and the lawyers for both sides made their opening statements. Lawrence Buhler, one of Sanderson’s attorneys, spoke first, followed by Steve Owens, who represented Paltrow.
Owens corroborated Paltrow’s version of events saying that she was traveling downhill from Sanderson when the accident occurred.
Around one week will pass during the trial. Paltrow has not yet testified, but her lawyer has said that family members who were skiing with her at the time of the event will.
