In 1978, on the eve of his fifteenth birthday, Allen joined Def Leppard after his mother responded to an ad looking for a substitute drummer.

In 1984, while trying to pass another car at high speed, the British musician lost control of his Corvette and smashed into a stone wall. His limb was amputated after being severed and reattached by doctors, but the infection was too severe to treat.

After his accident in 1984, the drummer has been using adapted gear to continue playing with only one arm.
