Is Andrea Dre Greene in the Swarm Based on a Real Serial Killer?

Daniel DaleBy Daniel DaleMarch 18, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

Swarm’s Andrea “Dre” Greene, portrayed by Dominique Fishback is a terrifying look at obsessive fans. The fourth and final season of Atlanta was directed by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers who have now teamed up for their new project, Swarm which centers on a young lady who is a rabid follower of the internationally renowned pop diva Ni’Jah.

Despite the disclaimer at the beginning of each episode stating that “This is not a work of fiction” viewers are left wondering if the character of Andrea “Dre” Greene is real due to her borderline-obsessive behavior toward the musician.

The fixation in ‘Swarm,’ a film available on Amazon Video, drives the main character down a dark and perilous road. Dre has a soft spot for Ni’Jah. She has a serious crush on the singer and hopes to become best friends with her one day.

She has a really hard time in the real world since she is always in her head. Tragic events have left Dre feeling more isolated than ever. She decides to begin murdering those who have posted negative comments about Ni’Jah.

There’s something about Dre that makes you forget she’s a fictional character and wonder whether the show’s writers were inspired by a real person.

Is Andrea Greene From Swarm Real?

Andrea “Dre” Greene is not based on anyone in real life and is entirely fictional. To depict what may happen if a fan’s passion for an artist developed to the point where they might resort to violence to defend them.

The show’s makers have taken real-world incidents and adapted them to the persona they have created for Swarm.

Ni’Jah, the musician Dre so passionately admires, is likewise an invention of the program, albeit the producers of Swarm have obviously modeled her after the real-life pop superstar Queen Bey, Beyoncé. To a lesser extent, Ni’Jah’s devoted following, The Swarm, is modeled after Beyoncé’s actual fanbase, the Bey Hive.

The Show’s Plot is Based on Actual Events

Dre is an invented character in Swarm, but her actions are inspired by actual occurrences. Every episode begins with the disclaimer, “This is not a work of fiction,” to make this point crystal obvious. The use of names, places and/or events that are based on real people or events is intended.

Before the release of Swarm, co-creator Janine Nabers told the Los Angeles Times:

“We performed research for months to basically locate situations between 2016 and 2018 that we could put our main character in”.

“It means it’s not a work of fiction at all. The story of our protagonist, Dre, is based on a combination of true killings and internet rumors. Very little of it is made up”.

He added:

“I created something alongside [Glover], a music artist who has his own kind of swarm and fans, so we pulled from experiences both personal and not”.

Nabers explained:

“As a result, I don’t mind if people make comparisons to Nicki Minaj’s Barbz or Taylor Swift’s Swifties. That’s the kind of discussion we hope will happen”.
