As a follow-up to Everything, Everywhere, All at Once’s Oscar nomination for Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, A24 has purchased international rights to the 1984 cult smash concert movie Stop Making Sense, which will be released in theaters later this year.
The first film Jonathan Demme directed will get a 4K restoration from A24. This would be a great midnight picture for Cannes if the studio has time to clean it properly. The announcement follows on the heels of A24’s purchase and subsequent re-release of Pi, directed by Darren Aronofsky.
Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison are the key members of the band, but the album also has guest appearances from P-Bernie Funk’s Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry, and Edna Holt. Famous Talking Heads songs including “Burning Down the House,” “Living During Wartime,” “Take Me to the River,” “Psycho Killer,” and “Once in a Lifetime” are featured in this live performance, which was filmed over three nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre in December 1983.
Producer Brian Eno, whose resume also includes work with David Bowie, U2, and Coldplay, gave the band the impetus they needed to create their unique brand of art-punk-funk rock.

The Talking Heads released a statement full of excitement after hearing the news: “There was a band. A concert took place. It looks like a movie! The band disbanded in 1991 but reunited to perform during their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. On the latest episode of Deadline’s Crew Call, Byrne assured us, “we’re not going to do it,” meaning that the Talking Heads would never reform.
The original song “This Is a Life,” which Byrne co-wrote with Son Lux and Mitski, is included in the Daniels’ multi-Oscar-winning film Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Byrne previously won an Oscar for his work on the score for the 1987 Bernardo Bertolucci film The Last Emperor. Byrne is so close to winning the EGOT; all he needs is an Emmy.

This reissue of Stop Making Sense is being produced by Gary Goetzman. On August 18, Rhino will release a remastered vinyl and digital deluxe edition of the soundtrack that will feature the full Stop Making Sense concert for the first time. In the United States alone, the film grossed $5 million.
Byrne is seen in a humorous teaser that was released alongside the news this morning, picking up his dry cleaning and declaring, “I’m picking up. It’s been around for quite some time. The next scene shows him returning home from Stop Making Sense with his infamous large suit, where he promptly changes into it and dances around to “This Must Be the Place.”
