Throughout the first three films of the Evil Dead franchise, filmmaker Sam Raimi put his friend Bruce Campbell through hell on screen, forcing his Ash Williams character to fight off legions of evil spirits while also losing limbs and loved ones.

Director Lee Cronin reveals that while Ash had a quick post-credits cameo in Alvarez’s Evil Dead, he won’t be appearing in Evil Dead Rising. But it doesn’t mean you can’t find Campbell if you try.

As Cronin explains, it felt like in order to move the franchise somewhere new and to unlock the possibilities of the universe to tell more stories, it needed to break free of Ash.

Cronin said:

“But Bruce is hidden in the movie somewhere. Bruce has a small presence in the movie. The first person to figure it out and send me a tweet, I’ll give them 50 bucks. Keep your eyes and ears peeled, people”.

Cronin believed that continuing the spirit of the Evil Dead trilogy, if not the actual characters, was the best way to pay tribute to Raimi and Campbell.

The filmmaker says, “This movie’s had to have the energy” because that was one of his main goals. A number of recent horror films have used the existential as a main motivator and this has helped propel the genre to new heights. For me, seeing an Evil Dead film is a great excuse to kick back with some popcorn and relax.

To return to Evil Dead II, I’d like to reflect on the film’s incessant inventiveness, which serves to continually revitalize the viewing experience. Prepare yourself for the pinnacle of terrifying experiences. Beginning on April 21st, you can see Evil Dead Rise in theaters around the UK.
