The directors of Superman: Legacy, James Gunn and Peter Safran are taking a chance on an up-and-coming filmmaker. Gunn called the film “The true beginning of the DCU” in his big slate announcement video back in January.

Although Gunn penned the film, he was unable to include Henry Cavill in the DC Extended Universe (DCU). The picture, according to Gunn will center on the early years of Superman’s life, but future films may find room for Cavill.

James Gunn Tweeted: “We’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Gunn tweeted that he’d turned down working on a Superman film years ago and only figured out a way into the character recently centering around Superman’s heritage.

According to Gunn’s tweets, there will also be plenty of his Dad’s Things in the upcoming Superman: Legacy film. When the picture debuts on July 11, 2025, it will also be the birthday of Gunn’s late father’s birth.

James Gunn said:

“He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him.”
