Sony Built a $600 Point-and-Shoot Camera for the Blind

Sony has a reputation for producing state-of-the-art cameras, such as the A7R V and A7S III. In this recent publication, the manufacturer makes no claims about the superiority of its newest sensor or autofocus mechanism.

Instead, it is a tool whose purpose is to make photography enjoyable for people who have never had the opportunity to do so before.

The DSC-HX99 RNV camera package announced on 13 March, is made specifically for those with vision impairments. A Sony point-and-shoot camera and a viewfinder with retinal laser projection technology make up the entirety of the system.

A Cybershot DSC-HX99 has been used for the photography. The HX99, which made its debut in 2018, is distinguished by its 18-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor, integrated image stabilization and 24-720mm zoom lens.

The Retissa Neoviewer is a viewfinder made by the Japanese company QD Laser. This technology uses lasers to display a digital image from a camera onto the user’s retina. While Sony admits that not everyone will benefit from this technology, those who can utilize the HX99’s viewfinder to identify faces, read signs and take images or videos will be pleased with the results.

Dr. Mitsuru Sugawara, president and CEO of QD Laser, claims that their laser retinal projection of the Retissa Neoviewer is an entirely novel technology that has been put into practical use for the first time anywhere in the world.

This summer, you can pre-order the HX99RNV kit for $600. As a result, the total price won’t exceed what you’d pay for a standalone Sony DSC-HX99. Sony has pledged to fund “the majority” of the device’s development as a sign of support for people with limited vision.

However, you can only buy one of these kits through Sony and they’re only selling a limited number. Also, Sony intends to collaborate with schools in the United States and Japan to provide the device to those with low eyesight.
