After a three-year absence, HBO has premiered a whole new season of Perry Mason. In 1932, when the rest of the United States was beginning to recover from the Great Depression, Los Angeles was booming.

Perry Mason, a down-and-out private investigator, is still reeling from the devastation of the Great War and his recent divorce at the beginning of Season 2. His findings have far-reaching implications for Mason, his friends and family and local politicians when he is recruited to investigate a high-profile child kidnapping prosecution.

Our main characters, Perry, Della Street, and Paul Drake, will soon find themselves at the center of a case that reveals massive conspiracies and forces them to question what it means to be truly guilty. The release date for all eight episodes of Season 2 is March 6, 2023.

Matthew Rhys as Perry Mason

Perry Mason, played by Matthew Rhys, is a private detective and ex-soldier living in Depression-era Los Angeles. He is a superb detective with a quick mind and keen observation abilities, willing to put himself at risk to get to the bottom of the mysteries he investigates.

He is deeply committed to fairness and will challenge authority when he thinks it is wrong. The trauma of World War One and the breakdown of his marriage expose Mason to be a flawed and multifaceted human being.

Welsh actor Rhys is most recognized for his two Emmy Award nods for portraying Philip Jennings in the hit F.X. series The Americans. He has also made guest appearances on sitcoms like Brothers and Sisters and films like A Lovely Day in the Neighborhood and Death Comes to Pemberley.

Juliet Rylance as Della Street

As E.B. Jonathan’s assistant and legal secretary, Della Street is Juliet Rylance. Throughout his inquiries, Mason is greatly aided by her assistance. Della is portrayed as a competent and well-organized individual who helps to keep Mason’s crazy life in order.

Despite all that she has been through, Della has proven to be unwavering in her support of Mason. Whether it’s gathering evidence, following up on leads, or just providing moral support, she’s always there for him. She is revealed to be intelligent and witty. Both of these qualities are put to use in helping Mason solve crimes.

Rylance is a well-known English actress who has appeared in numerous films, TV and stage productions. Rylance started as a theatrical actress in the industry, appearing in both West End and Broadway shows. Later, she leaped to the silver screen, appearing in films including Frances Ha and A Dog’s Purpose.

Chris Chalk as Paul Drake

Paul Drake, played by Chris Chalk is a detective-minded beat cop. Because of his street smarts and investigative prowess, he is often the one to find crucial evidence that leads to arrests and convictions.

Contrasting Mason’s more serious demeanor, Drake’s portrayal as having a lively disposition and a decent sense of humor brings humor, warmth, and a feeling of adventure to the show.

Chris Chalk as Paul Drake

Paul faces a city and police force that are both highly racialized and oppressive throughout the show. Before moving on to acting in movies and television shows, Chalk began his career as a stage actor appearing in productions in New York and across the country. His film T.V. edited list includes Gotham and 12 Years an enslaved person.

Eric Lange as Gene Holcomb

Gene Holcomb played by Eric Lange is a crooked cop who will go to any lengths to achieve his goals, including breaking the law. Holcomb is a nuanced and intriguing protagonist who raises the stakes and complexity of the show. His drive makes him an engaging character and a suitable opponent for Mason.

Lange was cast as Stuart Radzinsky, a recurring character on Lost, an ABC series, in 2009. After that, from 2010 to 2013, he portrayed Erwin Sikowitz on the Nickelodeon show Victorious. In 2013, however, he broke through to a broader audience by performing  David Tate/Kenneth Hasting on the FX series The Bridge.

Diarra Kilpatrick as Clara Drake

Mason’s private eye, Paul Drake has a wife named Clara, played by Diarra Kilpatrick. Clara is a likable protagonist who is making positive changes in her life. The series delves deeply into Clara and Paul’s relationship. Paul is caught between his allegiance to Mason and his love for his wife, making their relationship difficult and tense.

Kilpatrick has been in several episodes of the ABC Digital series American Koko which adds to his impressive acting resume. Kilpatrick has also appeared in parts of Private Practice, The Last O.G. and The Twilight Zone.

Katherine Waterston as Ginny Aimes

Perry Mason co-stars Katherine Waterston as the upbeat teacher Ginny Aimes, who also happens to teach at the same school Perry’s son attends. Despite the bleakness of the Great Depression, the arrival of this woman brings a welcome light of hope into their life.

Waterston made her acting debut in the film Michael Clayton. Following her breakout performance in Inherent Vice, she continued to feature in films as a supporting character, such as Robot & Frank and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. She has since acted in several critically acclaimed films, including Steve Jobs, Alien: Covenant, Babylon, and the Fantastic Beasts series, where she plays American witch Tina Goldstein.

Recurring Characters

Shea Whigham (Joker), who once played Pete Strickland, a regular throughout the season, will only appear in Season 2 as a recurrent role. Mason collaborates closely with Pete, a private eye, on several cases. To get the truth, Strickland is shown as a tenacious and resourceful detective who will stop at nothing. Despite having entirely different personalities and working styles, the two guys share a close relationship built on respect and appreciation.
