If you’ve heard the news about what happened to Mike Helmann on Street Outlaws, you know that the cast and crew of the Discovery series lost a colleague who was loved and cherished by so many, as racer Mike Murillo put it.
According to his IMDb page, Mike was a producer on a number of different shows including Street Outlaws, Gym Rescue (on Spike), Garage Rehab (on Discovery) and 24 Hours to Hell and Back with Gordon Ramsay.
Who Confirmed the News of Mike Helmann’s Death?
On August 14, 2022, the Mike Murillo Racing team shared a Facebook post, presumably written by Murillo himself updating Discovery show viewers with sad news.
This past weekend, right before the show, we unexpectedly lost someone very special to us. On Thursday, August 11, 2022 evening, Michael was discovered unresponsive in his hotel room.
The post went on:
Michael David Helmann was special. Not only was Michael special to us, but he was loved and cherished by so many racers in the Street Outlaws organization.
Michael was our producer. Michael was that producer that we knew actually cared about us and treated us like family. Michael would just send random texts from time to time to say, Can’t wait to see y’all or videos in an attempt at getting the song ‘Watermelon Sugar’ stuck in my head (again) for the weekend.
There were two videos attached to that Facebook post: one of Helmann singing along to Harry Styles in the car, and another in which he pretended to be Murillo and gushed about his “favorite producer, Michael David Helmann.”
The message continued:
Michael, in the brief time you were here, you improved the world. Your selfless love for others will remain in our hearts forever. This is a great illustration of how entertaining he could be.
A photo of a memorial service program for Helmann was posted to the Mike Murillo Racing Facebook page nearly two months later.

In the wake of Mike’s passing, a GoFundMe user by the name of Dana Walker established a campaign to aid his family which has since received over $52,000 from over 240 contributors. The official cause of Mike Helmann’s death has not been determined.
