After recently having surgery to repair his left shoulder, Duane Brown wants to return for a 17th season, as confirmed by his agent, Kennard McGuire. Brown signed a two-year contract with the team in August, after the Jets’ starting right tackle Mekhi Becton suffered a knee injury during training camp last year.
After moving George Fant to the right side, he planned to use Brown as a left tackle. Brown, however, suffered a labral tear in his left shoulder during a non-contact drill just days before the Ravens’ Week 1 opener.
Brown could have called it a season and still collected on his entire guaranteed salary, but instead, he played in only four games returned for another 12 and then retired before the season finale. By continuing to play despite the injury, the longtime Texan and Seahawk won over his colleagues and superiors.
Brown has been working to return and Jets coach Robert Saleh has seen him in the weight room. Saleh said:
Duane is a freaking rock star, man. The way he fought through pain and injury and he did what I’d say about 90 percent of players probably wouldn’t have done in terms of playing when he didn’t have to. All his money was already guaranteed and the guy still strapped up and played games for us took it all the way to Week 17. So, a lot of respect for him, love his grind, love his grit, love what he stands for and if he’s here, it’d be awesome.
There are some intriguing options for the Jets to consider at tackle with Brown, Becton and Max Mitchell all coming back from injuries or near-death experiences. The Jets’ No. 13 overall pick has been projected as a tackle in many early mock draughts.

If Brown decides to come back, he is immediately penciled in as the starting left tackle. Becton has made it clear on social media that he sees himself as a left tackle. Whether or not he’s willing to join the good guys. Mitchell played right tackle for the first four games of the season.
