On Friday, March 3, 2023, the first death from monkeypox (viruela simica in Spanish) was confirmed by the Ministry of Health. A hospital reported the death of a patient who had been hospitalized for 19 days after being diagnosed with monkeypox, one of several underlying pathologies.
The healthcare facility is currently waiting for the autopsy results. The patient was a 30-year-old Costa Rican man who had been hospitalized. The health department did not identify the hospital. Epidemic week 8 (February 19-25) saw the occurrence of the disease outbreak.
However, experts have been warning about the disease’s low mortality rate since the first cases were reported in Europe and North America.
When did the First Case of Monkeypox Found?
The first case of monkeypox was discovered in June of 2022 in Costa Rica. Health reported that 373 suspected cases have been looked into since then, with 198 of them being confirmed. Those with their cases confirmed by laboratories are “predominantly male” and “average age of 33 years,” the report states.
There are five women and three children under the age of 18 on the list of those affected two adolescents and a four-month-old baby. The percentage of non-Americans affected by this is 7%. Pathologies that weaken the immune system are present in the past for 55.6% of confirmed cases.
When asked for details on the other cases, Health did not provide any. Most of the reported cases have been found in the Central Valley, specifically in the cities of San Jose and Heredia.

What are the symptoms of Monkeypox?
The most typical signs are painful or itchy lesions on the skin, much like pimples or blisters, which can appear anywhere on the body but most commonly in the genital, perineal, facial, hand, and foot areas.
Besides respiratory symptoms, you may also experience a high temperature, chills, swollen glands, extreme fatigue, muscle aches, back pain and a throbbing headache (eg, sore throat, stuffy nose, or cough).
