After enduring prolonged health issues, Randolph Murdaugh III, a prominent member of the Murdaugh family of Hampton County and a partner in one of the largest law firms in the South Carolina Lowcountry passed away.
Who was Randolph Murdaugh III?
Randolph Murdaugh is the father of Alex Murdaugh who killed his wife and his own son. On June 10, 2021, just three days after the murders of his daughter-in-law Maggie and grandson Paul Murdaugh, he passed away at home.
He was the son of the late Randolph “Buster” Murdaugh Jr. and Gladys Marvin Murdaugh having been born on October 25, 1939 in Savannah, Georgia. Having completed his high school education at Wade Hampton in 1957, Murdaugh went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from USC in 1961.
A year later in 1964, he earned his law degree from the same institution. Prior to and after his time as Solicitor, he was an attorney for the firm of Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth and Detrick (PMPED). Murdaugh was appointed Solicitor in 1987 and served in that capacity until 2006.
In the 87 years prior to him, both of his forebears had held the position. Murdaugh was the lead prosecutor in over 200 murder cases during his time as Solicitor, earning him a reputation as a formidable opponent.
But he also had a reputation for caring about the defendants he prosecuted and doing what he could to help them turn their lives around. John Marvin, Lynn Goettee, Alex Murdaugh and Randolph Murdaugh III were the offspring of Murdaugh’s 1961 marriage to Elizabeth “Libby” Alexander.
