Rickey Smiley is speaking out about his son’s death with a warning and a testimony to his faith. Comedian and “Today” show host joined Craig Melvin to discuss the loss of his son Brandon in January.
On January 29, Smiley posted a video to Instagram in which he announced the “bad news” that his son had “passed away this morning.”
Even though Smiley broke the news in January, he did not say how old his son was or what caused his death, but Rickey Smiley has recently spoken about the loss of his son.

Ricky Smiley said his son Brandon’s untimely death was due to an overdose. A month after the death of the 32-year-old, the radio host explained to Craig Melvin on the “Today show” why he and Brandon’s loved ones “speculate” that Brandon “succumbed to drug abuse.

In the interview released on Thursday, March 2, 2023 Smiley revealed that Brandon’s girlfriend had called him after finding him “unresponsive” on January 29. She claimed that he had overdosed in her own words, he revealed.
He said:
The comic’s “crying” daughter Taylor called him again to tell him about Brandon’s death as he was getting ready to board a flight to Georgia.
Smiley admitted:
he was “shocked but not surprised” by the tragedy explaining that he had prepared … deep inside for the possibility as Brandon struggled with addiction for years. His mother and I made several attempts to try to send him to get the help that he needed, send him to rehab. We thought that he as doing better. He had just joined the church and he had just gotten baptized again probably a month before he passed away.
