On 23 Feb, the Oscar-winning actress Jean Smart opened up about her recent heart surgery recovery.

“February is American Heart Month — a time when the nation spotlights heart health, so it feels important to share with all of you that I am recovering from a recent, successful heart procedure,” the 71-year-old wrote on social media Thursday.

“I am fortunate to have excellent professional care and support from family and friends while I continue to recuperate. Please listen to your body and talk to your doctor — I’m very glad I did!”

Smart did not go into specifics about her operation. HBO Max, Hacks’ production firm, and Universal Television all released statements on the same day:

“We are overjoyed that the heart surgery on our dear Jean Smart went well and that she is recovering well. UTV and HBO Max offer their best wishes.”

The critically regarded show will be taking a break for the time being. But, the next season’s production kicked off last month, and some departments had to suspend their work to prepare. It has been reported by Deadline that production would go up “on or around March 13.”

Smart has dealt with difficulties in the past while filming Hacks. In June 2021, she said publicly that her spouse of over 34 years, the actor Richard Gilliland, had died abruptly at the age of 71 from a heart problem.

“I feel like I just should say something about my husband, because he passed away very unexpectedly,” Smart told the New Yorker. “I still had a week of Hacks left to do. It was hard. I had to do a funeral scene.”

The scene was used in the first season finale, and Smart stated she was “a wreck” during filming it, but “it actually turned out to be extremely amusing.” Gilliland was known to the actress from his role as Mary Jo’s boyfriend J.D. in Designing Women, which starred Annie Potts.
