An American actor, comedian and writer, Richard Jay Belzer was born on August 4, 1944 and passed away on February 19, 2023. He was best known for his role as BPD Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and DA Investigator John Munch.

How Did Richard Belzer Build his Career?

After Belzer’s first divorce, he moved to New York City where he lived with singer Shelley Ackerman and performed stand-up comedy at clubs like Pips, The Improv and Catch a Rising Star. Belzer began making appearances in films occasionally during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In a 1978 episode of Sesame Street, Season 9, Richard Belzer can be seen in a brief skit as a younger version of himself. The skit involves two young men whose picnic and boat ride are interrupted by a dog who devours their food.

He is well-known for his bit parts in movies like Scarface, Night Shift, Cafe Flesh and Fame. Along with John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner and Harold Ramis, Belzer was a featured player on the National Lampoon Radio Hour, a half-hour comedy program broadcast on 600 plus U.S. stations.

Several of his Radio Hour sketches in which he portrayed a witty call-in talk show host named “Dick Ballantine” were released on National Lampoon albums. Belzer was a familiar face on American television in the ’90s. He frequently appeared as a news anchor and reporter on The Flash.

He played Detective William Henderson on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. After that, he played the lead role of police detective John Munch in two television series set in different cities: the Baltimore-based Homicide: Life on the Street and the New York City–based Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Belzer was born to Jewish parents on August 4, 1944 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He claimed that his comedic career began when he tried to make his mother laugh so that she would stop beating him and his brother.

Belzer began his journalism career at the Bridgeport Post after graduating from Fairfield Warde High School. Belzer attempted to enroll at what is now known as Dean College, but he was expelled from the Franklin, Massachusetts, campus when it was still known as Dean Junior College.
